While one member of staff was assisting someone to eat they were also eating their own food. During this time the member of staff also spoke with another member of staff. We saw that they hovered the spoon by the person's mouth while they finished chewing.

One person told us that staff were always polite, they felt they understood them and listened when they were upset or worried. There was a commitment to maintaining links with the community and this took shape in a variety of ways. For example local schools were invited into the home to be involved in activities and the home entered a float in a local carnival. Staff are highly trained and there is home-cooked food and regular outings organised to support good physical health and emotional well-being. Activities at Maiden Castle House
When they lack mental capacity to take particular decisions, any made on their behalf must be in their best interests and as least restrictive as possible. At our last inspection of Maiden Castle in November 2014 we had concerns that the quality assurance systems were not effective and that peoples’ records were not always accurate and up to date. As well as this we had concerns that the service had not followed correct procedures as required by the Mental Capacity Act and medicines were not always administered appropriately. We found the provider had made improvements since our last inspection in November 2014. Choosing care has been ranked one of life’s most stressful events.
If you look carefully whilst you wander on the top of the hill you can make out another area that is thought to be the location of a shrine for the temple. This temple was probably the last great thing to take place at Maiden Hill; from the 4th century on, the site fell into disuse and was resigned to use as pasture or farm land. Although the local area lacked few natural resources to create their own metal, it is thought that there was a great deal of trade amongst the forts and towns of the area. Our wonderful manager, Ash Smith, and fabulous chef, Maria Barnes, have decided to run 100km, yes - 100km!

People told us "I consider myself fortunate to live here" and "we have some lovely carers". During this inspection there was a service improvement plan which was monitored and updated at least monthly in a quality assurance group meeting. The quality group checked that actions had been completed or were in progress. As well as this other improvements which were identified were included in the plan. For example the accommodation on the top floor was considered by the provider to be too large a space and there was an improvement plan to create two smaller units.

Originally Maiden Castle was only about 16 acres in size with a single, simple ditch and bank reaching a height of around 9 feet. This was all good and well for a while until the inhabitants, like most folks, decided it was time their little town underwent some improvement and expansion. Around 450 BC, Maiden Castle was enlarged to encompass an area of 47 acres with new defences rising to 11 feet and several new ditches in excess of 23 feet. We observed in some areas of the home there was a lot of laughter as staff worked with the people they supported.
Care Services
He started his career at Maiden Castle House as a Care Assistant and thanks to Ash’s dedication and commitment has progressed to take over the running of the home as Home Manager. The organisation’s values and philosophy were clearly explained to staff and there was a positive culture where people felt included and their views were sought. People were protected from the risk of abuse because there were clear procedures in place to recognise and respond to abuse and staff had been trained in how to follow the procedures. We found communal toilets and bathrooms were clean and well stocked with gloves and aprons. We found each bathroom and toilet had paper towels in a dispenser and liquid soap.
